Hybrid Single Pair Ethernet: “One Device - One Interface” Solution

Single Pair Ethernet (SPE) is a future-proof technology, redefining industrial ethernet landscape via one pair of copper wires as an uniform single-source solution for all industrial applications. We are familiar with traditional ethernet cables from the LAN sector or cables from industrial field that use 2 or 4 pairs of wires for data transmission. With the SPE, both data transmission and power transfer can be provided simultaneously, using power over data line (PoDL) up to 50W.

 

What is a Hybrid SPE Solution?

Even though SPE offers both power and data transmission and shows the same performance as today’s predominant 4-pair ethernet cables, it still have high power delivery limitations. If the PoDL classifications up to max. 50 Watts do not cover the power requirements of the IIOT devices, the solution to the problem comes in the form of Hybrid SPE cables, designed for industrial environments with higher currents and larger power transmission. In order to support the end customers in their “one device one interface ” demand, CTi has been pushing the development of M8 & M12 compatible Hybrid SPE cables.

M8 Hybrid SPE

M8 Hybrid SPE cables are supporting a configuration build up out of a SPE data pair for 1 Gbit/s data transmission purposes (AWG 22 to AWG 26) combined with separate two power wires for powering the remote equipment up to 200 W @ 24 V DC and 400 W @ 48 V DC. Main usage of this hybrid SPE solution would be for applications requiring flexible shielded cables used at distances up to 40 meters and high-power levels at the remote powered device.

M12 Hybrid SPE

Developing the Hybrid M12 cable is the logical consequence following the initial M8 version. Combining them in an industrial standard housing such as M12, the new IEC 63161-7 standard now defines an universal single-interface solution for future IIoT devices. It can handle even higher power levels (400 W (2x) @ 60 V) than with the M8 Hybrid SPE. The basis of the solution is to add more power wires next to the SPE pair.
